Thlog #7

Wow! What a big week. We had WP2’s turned in (and graded very quickly and efficiently – thanks Zack!) as well as WP3 introduced and an online class! I honestly wasn’t a huge fan of the online class, but that isn’t surprising to me. I prefer real books to online versions, handwritten notes to typed notes, and CD’s to itunes so it was expected that I didn’t really like the online class. I appreciated the notes on our journal responses more – I hope we can carry that over into more classes!
I really struggled on my WP2 and I was a little bummed about it after receiving my grade. Missing class definitely hurt me as far as my understanding for the concepts and direction discussed while I was gone, but unfortunately I didn’t have a choice L. I have some great comments that definitely will push me in the right direction for portfolio prep and I’m really looking forward to coming back to my WP2 in a couple of weeks now that I have these criticisms.
We didn’t have any reading to discuss for this past week, but I did just finish the reading for Monday’s class and had some thoughts on it. The Writing with Pictures piece was discussing comic writing strategies that appear to only apply to creating comics on the surface. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that those tips could definitely apply to our writing as well! I really liked the comment that “The identity you project needs to convey your ethos your sense of credibility, to the audience you’re addressing." (page 130 Writing Identities) In fact, the whole discussion on identity and how you project yourself in your writing was really eye opening. I especially loved the reference to Nickel and Dimed author Barbara Ehrenreich in writing identities! I read that book for my high school AP English course and learned some great lessons about writers going undercover to explore the topic they’re writing about. I was happy to see it coming back around!

I can’t believe we’re already going into week 8! I know it’ll be another busy week catching up from the bit of confusion of our online class and getting ready for PB3A and WP3. See you guys tomorrow and hope everyone survives extravaganza!
