Video Responses

1. Moves were pretty obvious in all of these videos. Bob Ross frequently repeats things, he describes the tools he uses pretty well, he describes the physical painting moves he has, and he makes comments that don't have much to do with the painting to keep the mood light.

Walt (I think that was his name) had a move of taking nature and turning into something man-made
Josh stopped using brushes and instead used knives that were originally meant for scraping off paint but instead he used them to apply paint to his canvas. He didn't mix his colors thoroughly either.
Ivan made a move to not paint the whole tree and instead did a study on just the trunk. he worked with watercolor which was different from the others, he also made a move of working rough to detailed.
Mark worked at first with charcoal, which was different than the others. He worked background to foreground and used only white and black. He selected specific branches to highlight or eliminate.

2. Bob Ross is always happy, everything you do with painting is happy and what you want to do, carefree and no worries!
The disney artists were a little more serious, Walt talked a lot about man-made things and architecture while describing his art as well as geometric interpretation. Josh saw that trees had spirits and personality and felt he had to work fast to capture his first impression. Ivan saw the richness and variety in nature and focused in on the tree trunk as a portrait. Mark saw the explosive force of the tree and painted all of it. All of the artists painted what they saw/interpreted.

3. I talked a lot about their style in 2, but as an impact Bob Ross was very calming and encouraging. He has a you can do it attitude which makes me believe I could even paint (I definitely can't)
The Disney artists left me in awe that they're so talented, I wish I could paint like that. Walt Disney also talked about how in animation, art is a group effort and it may go completely against your style. I liked the reminder that teamwork is important in art and it's not always about a single person.

  1. Kaitlyn, I agree with what you said about Bob Ross. His style of teaching was actually much different than the Disney painters. They mostly used the word “I” and sounded very instructional, but Bob’s voice was super soothing. He repeated instructions and taught viewers using simple language and little words like “back and forth, back and forth” to help them learn. I like the way you explained the Disney painters’ moves. I felt so overwhelmed because they were going so fast that I kind of just rambled, but you managed to explain their moves perfectly in a more comprehensible way.

  2. Hey Kaitlyn! I thought that you did a really good job of explaining specific similarities and differences between the videos and the between the artists themselves. I think that you could have provided an explanation as to why certain moves were used repeatedly throughout all of the videos, but I understand that time was an obstacle for this assignment. Overall, I thought that you had really great insight, especially in #2. I loved that you explained how each artist saw the same tree differently and how that affected their approach to painting it.
